Signs your computer needs a technician (and what to try first)
Slow, noisy, overheating or full of pop-ups? What you can safely try yourself, the warning signs that need a professional, and how to prepare for a repair.

Computers rarely fail all at once. They usually give warning signs first. Knowing which ones you can fix yourself and which need a technician can save your files and your money.
Try these first
- 1Restart the computer properly, not just close the lid.
- 2Install any waiting system updates.
- 3Free up storage space; a nearly full drive slows everything down.
- 4Uninstall programs you do not recognise or no longer use.
Time to call a technician
- Clicking, grinding or new loud noises. This can mean a failing drive. Back up immediately and stop using it if you can.
- Overheating or sudden shutdowns, often caused by dust or a failing fan.
- Pop-ups, a changed home page or programs you did not install, which can be signs of malware.
- It will not start, or shows error messages on start-up.
- A swollen battery, where the case bulges or the trackpad lifts. Stop using and charging the laptop and get it looked at, because damaged batteries can be a fire risk.
Repair or replace?
Upgrades such as a faster solid-state drive or more memory can make an older computer feel new again for much less than a replacement. A good technician will tell you honestly when a repair is not worth it.
Before the repair
- Back up your photos and documents if the computer still works.
- Write down what goes wrong and when it started.
- Have your passwords ready, especially for your email account.

Common questions
Is it safe to keep using a laptop with a swollen battery?
No. Stop using and charging it, keep it away from anything flammable, and have the battery replaced by a technician.
Can a slow computer be fixed without replacing it?
Often, yes. Removing unwanted software, freeing up space and upgrading to a solid-state drive or more memory can make a big difference.
